Statement

Are photographs simply records of the past?
Can a photograph operate in the present tense?
Can a photograph create its own setting?

This project explores these questions.

Using a contemplative approach to photography, I use meditation techniques just prior to making the pictures to enhance visual sensitivity, quiet the mind, and suspend the usual sense of time passing. The scenes are framed in a way to isolate and amplify my initial discoveries, whether abstractions or street scenes. The pictures are visual meditations, records of what was seen, but are also opportunities to see right now, color on paper. These pictures are, perhaps, more about the process of seeing per se than what may be depicted.

I made the photographs between 2014 and 2016, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Boulder, Colorado; and various locations across India, including Delhi, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Shimla, Madanapalle and others. Exhibitions may include images limited to one of the three locations, or perhaps, selections from all three.

The images are printed to 16”x24,” floated in thin profile box frames with an external dimension of approximately 24”x30”. The photographs are printed by the artist to archival standards.
