Selatangar

This was one of the last stops on my journey. A six hour drive through the night, passing back through Reykjavik led me down into the Reykjanes Peninsula. On the way I got lost in a maze of urban roads amidst new construction, shopping malls etc. Eventually I found the right road, which led back into relative isolation. I drove all the way to Grindavik and spent the night at a very loud and unpleasant campsite. I had passed many strange sites along the way, Seletangar being one. In hindsight, I wish I had spent the night there.

The next day I made an obligatory visit to the Blue Lagoon, and then afterward journeyed back to Selatangar. I met a fellow tourist along the way and we explored this abandoned village together.

This was once a fishing village that was abandoned after 1880. It is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Southwest of Reykjavik. The area is covered with driftwood, debris, ruins of old equipment, as well as the foundations of former dwellings built among the rugged lava fields . It is said the ruins are haunted. I agree. A very strange atmosphere here.
