This is a bizarre region within Jökulsárgljúfur National Park. Apparently, there was once volcanic activity below the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum, which caused some catastrophic geological events. The bizarre, tortured mountains and basalt formations are the result. The canyon is also one of the few places where trees can be found.
I spent most of my time exploring Hljóðarklettar (rock of echoes). The walking trails form a maze through some very strange formations. It is called echo rocks for how the formations deflect the sound of the river, making it difficult to determine where it is coming from. The basalt in places forms a distinct honeycomb pattern, of which I made several photographs. This particular example has been photographed many times… I hiked this area thoroughly, making photographs throughout the night.
The next day I walked around Eyjan, where there are small ponds, streams, and scrub land. This peaceful, relatively lush area stood in contrast to the more barren rugged areas just to the north.
