Geysir

Location: 64°19′0.05″N, 20°17′59.64″W
Time of Visit: May 24th, 11am

This location is considered by some the most famous tourist attraction in the country. Geysir is also the original geyser. It used to spout up to 80m, but now not so much. There is a sister geyser, Strokkur that reaches 35m every 10 minutes or so. It seemed more frequent to me. This is the one featured in the images.

Approaching by car, the steam was visible from several miles away. As can be expected it is a very touristy spot. There are safety ropes and paths to direct foot traffic through the maze of bubbling wonders. Across the street there is the requisite gift shop and restaurant charging exorbitant prices. In front of this building you can find some art of the highest, most exalted level…a statue of a troll.

The day was very windy with a cold, damp edge. I made the tourist images over the course of an hour. Leaving the complex I encountered a hitchhiker, a late middle-aged woman with bad teeth, who said that she wanted to go wherever I was going. I politely declined and drove on. I wonder what her story was? I encountered the same person on the other side of the country a week later, where again she asked for a ride.
